I am grateful to have been awarded the 2023 Fryer Library Fellowship, where I will research the Rudolf Pekarek Papers held in the UQ Fryer Library Collection. I was first introduced to this collection while working as a Collections Assistant for Lauren Chalk, the Curator and Head of Collections of the Queensland Holocaust Museum and Education Centre. This beautiful collection of scrapbooks, ephemera, and programs from Rudolf Pekarek, a conductor and musician from Czechoslovakia, will form the basis of my research. Rudolf Pekarek was a Holocaust survivor who made Queensland his home with his wife Terry Pekarek. He founded the Film, Opera, Koncert (FOK) Symphony Orchestra in Prague, was the conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra from 1949 and conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra from 1954 – 1967. More details about my project and the fellowship can be found here.
